Set up email on Android

How do I set up email on Android?

| Android Email Setup

To set up email in Outlook you need the following information from your email host:

  • Incoming Mail server (i.e. mail.yourdomain.co.uk)
  • Outgoing Mail server (i.e. mail.yourdomain.co.uk)
  • Username (usually your email address)
  • Email Password

Before we begin

We'll be focussing on the set up method for the Gmail app distributed with Android devices but this process can be used with a range of other trusted email clients

Manual set up

  1. Click the menu button in the top left corner
  2. Scroll down and click Settings
  3. Click Add Account
  4. Click Other
  5. Input your email address
  6. Select Account Type
    • IMAP (Preferred)
IMAP keeps the original email on the server once downloaded to your phone or computer. This means there's always a backup online and you can access it from multiple devices.
    • POP3
POP3 Deletes the email from the server once you have downloaded it. This is great for saving space, but you won't have a backup if your computer or mobile phone stop working.
  7. Input your password
  8. Incoming server settings

  9. Input Username
    • Usually your email address i.e. you@yourdomain.co.uk
  10. Input your password
  11. Input Incoming Mail Server
    • Usually mail.yourdomain.co.uk
  12. Click Next
  13. Outgoing server settings

  14. Input Username
    • Usually your email address i.e. you@yourdomain.co.uk
  15. Input your password
  16. Input Outgoing Mail Server
    • Usually mail.yourdomain.co.uk
  17. Click Next

The app will then verify your settings and complete. If there are any problems, you'll get an error. If this is the case, simply go back through these steps and ensure you've entered all information correctly.
